Laser treatment

The main advantage of lasers for the treatment of gum disease is that procedures are largely pain-free, reducing the need for local anesthetic. They are more precise for surgical treatments and have a coagulating effect which means that they can be used to reduce or prevent bleeding altogether. In addition when used for the treatment of gum disease (including periodontal pockets) the laser energy effectively destroys the bacterial microorganisms that release the toxins responsible for periodontitis. Finally, healing time and postoperative discomfort (swelling and scarring) are significantly reduced compared to traditional methods.

Laser Assisted Periodontal Treatment

The three-step, laser periodontal treatment is a minimally invasive periodontal disease therapy incorporating dentistry’s two best laser wavelengths. During step 1, the Nd:YAG laser is used to remove the diseased epithelial lining and to improve access to the root surface. In step 2, Er:YAG is used to thoroughly remove calculus from the root surface. And during step 3, Nd:YAG laser energy is used to coagulate and leave a stable fibrin clot. This combined laser approach enables wavelength-optimized treatments for periodontal therapy, which create the optimal conditions for healing periodontal tissues by removing the diseased epithelial lining of the periodontal pocket, removing microbial biofilm and calculus from the root surface and sealing the pocket after treatment with a stable fibrin clot. The laser peridontal treatment approach gives us the ability to treat patents’ moderate- to-severe periodontal disease the laser way. This minimizes and may even eliminate your need for sutures.
